God's laws were not written for us to live joyless, unbearable lives. Instead, Dr. Harold A. Carter, Jr., shows us in his book, The Power of God's Negatives: A Contemporary Look at What God Does Not Want Us to Do, that even though God's laws, at times, may seem negative to us, they were written so that we could live victorious Christian lives. Many people are living defeated lives as Christians because we have a wrong mentality about God's negatives. As Dr. Carter emphatically and unapologetically tells us, the negatives of God's Word are packed with much power and blessing for us, if we take heed to them.
Carter encourages us to view God's don't's as loving commands and as a gentle, but driving force that will encourage us to change those ways that are not pleasing to God and that are not beneficial to us.
From the introduction, Dr. Carter writes this about God's negatives and it's wonderful gift of free will to us:
"It is crucial, however, to know that even God's gift of free will to us has limits, blessings, and consequences, depending on the choices we make." He goes on to say: "... many of God's expectations are crouched in negative terms or languages. It is what God requires of us not to do that proves our obedience to God, and when we do what we want to do, that proves our disobedience. This book will seek to explore the power of choosing no, for there is much to be said that our no leads to our being blessed, while our yes leads to our being cursed."
Dr. Carter, citing Jesus as our perfect example, shows us how Jesus' willingness to submit Himself to God's negatives for His life led to the redemption, and hence salvation, of all mankind. Embracing God's negatives for your life will allow you to live a life of power, and one without regrets.
