Like many others, I am a big fan of Tim Tebow, and I am thankful for his bold stand for the Lord. He is a good role model for all young men to follow in many ways.
But also, like some older, more mature Christians, I have been nervous for him, because if he is not careful, he may allow people to put him on a pedestal as they have done with Tiger Woods. We see what is happening to Tiger Woods who has never made any claim to be a Christian. The once shining golf star is now the butt of vicious jokes, rebuke, and ridicule, which he probably deserves. To avoid a similar Greek tragedy, here are three things that Tim Tebow needs to do:
1. Stop crying after losing a game that his team deserved to lose simply because they were out-coached, out-played, and out-smarted. Even though I like Tim Tebow a great deal, I have to wonder whether those were tears of losing an important game or whether those were tears of hurt pride? Did he start to believe all of the hype to the point that he thought God would not allow him to lose another game? A great man is one who wins well and who wins a lot, but when he loses, he loses well, and he does it with class and grace, and with an attitude of 'I will get 'em next time.'
2. Second, it is great that he is going to save himself for marriage, but Tim Tebow needs to admit right now, while he is still a virgin and while there are no scandals, that it gets very tough sometimes. He needs to admit openly that even he has to sometimes say, like the Psalmist David, "my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped," and that 'if it were not for the grace of God, there go I into the arms of one of those buxom, voluptuous Gator ladies!' I am not suggesting that he is doing anything wrong, all I am saying is that I believe he should let people know up-front, that 'if God doesn't help me, and if you, my fans, don't pray for me, I, too, can fall just like Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Ted Haggard, David in the Bible, or any other notable person.'
3. Third, Tebow needs to calm down just a little and realize that what he is doing is just a game. It is not real life. Tim, I would encourage you not to get overly high when you win or overly somber when you lose. There are many things in life that are more important than an hour-long football game, and God wants you to show humility when you win and grace when you lose.
We all love Tim Tebow. Who would not love this dear, bold brother in Christ for so many reasons. May God bless you, young man of God!
And, Tim, by the way, the verse you highlighted under your eyes last night is still true: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).
Glory be to God!
